ITINERARY
-
DAY 1: Pick up at hotel in Prague. Drive to Houska Castle, a 13th century castle featured on Ghost Hunters International and allegedly built over the Gates of Hell to keep evil spirits from escaping into the world. Next we’ll make our way to Sedlec Ossuary, otherwise known as the Church of Bones, as it is decorated with more than 40,000 human skeletons. In the evening, take a walking tour through the most haunted spots in Prague Old Town, including the home and now museum of Josef Pisinger, allegedly haunted by little people who were murdered there. Overnight in Prague Old Town.
-
DAY 2: Drive to Salzburg, Austria to visit Moosham Castle, built in 1208 and the site of hundreds of beheadings of supposed witches. In addition to being home to a coven of angry witches, the castle is also thought to be a werewolf lair. Overnight in Salzburg.
-
DAY 3: This morning we’ll move on to Slovakia’s Cachtice Castle ruin, once the home of Countess Elizabeth Bathory, otherwise known as the Blood Countess. Bathory was accused of torturing and killing as many as 650 virgin girls and then bathing in their blood to keep her looking young. The castle has been featured on Ghost Hunters and The Scariest Places on Earth, as well as the movie Dragonheart. Next we’ll head to Orava Castle, where much of the 1922 vampire move Nosferatu was filmed. Overnight in Orava.
-
DAY 4: Drive to Budapest, Hungary for a more somber stop at the House of Terror, a museum that relates the experiences of fascist and communist dictatorial regimes in the country. Use the rest of the afternoon to explore the city. Overnight in Budapest.
-
DAY 5: This morning we’ll cross the border into Romania. We’ll stop in the city of Cluj-Napoca for lunch. Next, we’ll take a short walk through the nearby Hoia Baciu Forest, also known as the Bermuda Triangle of Romania, thought to be haunted by Romanian peasants who were murdered there. The forest was named after a shepherd who disappeared in the area along with 200 of his sheep. (The forest has made the list of Travel + Leisure’s and the BBC’s most haunted forests.) Overnight at Cluj-Napoca.
-
DAY 6: This morning we will drive to Poienari Castle, the grave of Vlad the Impaler, a prince who was accused of impaling up to 100,000 men, women and children. Next on to Dracula’s Castle, Castle Bran. Overnight in Transylvania.
