ITINERARY

  • DAY 1 (FRIDAY): We pick you up at your Reykjavík hotel between 9-9:30 and drive towards Thjorsardalur Valley, viewing Iceland’s most famous and active volcanoes, Hekla, which was thought in the Middle Ages to be the gateway to hell. We’ll drive along Thjorsa, the longest river in the country, and into the Thjorsardalur Valley to see Hjalparfoss Waterfall. We’ll have a lunch break in Hrauneyjar Highland Center, the last outpost before we enter Fjallabak Nature Reserve. We’ll drive through vast lava fields covered by snow, pass Hnausapollur and Ljotipollur Lakes and stop at the Frostastadavatn Lake before reaching Landmannalaugar which most likely is snow covered. The steep rhyolite (volcanic rock) mountains and lava fields are visible, showing the geothermal activity in hot springs and naturally heated rivers crisscrossing the land. After the drive you can relax in the geothermally heated pool while your driver-guide prepares dinner with premium Icelandic ingredients. In the evening look for the Northern Lights if the sky is clear. Overnight in geothermal lodge.

  • DAY 2 (SATURDAY): Start your day with an outdoor bath in the geothermally heated pool. The mountains encircling the area are mostly made from magma that was cooked in the magma chamber of a volcano located by Torfajokull Glacier south of Landmannalaugar. The Torfajokull-area is the country´s second largest high temperature geothermal area. During breakfast we plan the day according to snow conditions, weather and your own preferences. Some examples: a snowmobile tour, a hike, a modified super jeep, or just relax in the hot pool outside. In the evening enjoy a barbecue dinner and overnight at the lodge.

  • DAY 3 (SUNDAY): After breakfast we leave Landmannalaugar and head for the Hrauneyjar Dam for lunch. From there we drive through Thjorsardalur on to the Golden Circle route, taking us the Gullfoss Waterfall in the Hvita River, sourced by Hvitarvatn Glacier Lake and Langjokull Glacier. Next we come to Geysir geothermal field which has geysers and hundreds of hot springs, most of them with boiling water. Geysir, one of the most famous hot springs in the world, is the origin of the English word “geyser,” which means spouting hot spring. We then head on to Thingvellir, via Laugarvatn Village. Sometimes called the heart of Iceland, Thingvellir was declared a national park in 1930. Depending on weather and road conditions, we should arrive back in Reykjavik around dinner time.
