HIGHLIGHTS: Arnarstapi Bird Cliffs, Hellnar Nature Reserve, Snæfellsnesjökull National Park and Grundarfjördur village.

On this tour we’ll drive northward through the capital Hvalfjörður (Whale Bay), where we find the country’s first road tunnel made under the sea. Our first stop is the town of Borgarnes, an important trading post for the past several centuries. As we drive along the peninsula, you will learn the geology of Snæfellsnes, as well as the folklore that has been passed down through generations. We’ll take a short walk and get refreshments at Arnarstapi, then drive to the small settlement Hellnar which has just a few houses situated in a cluster to shelter them from the elements. This place is largely abandoned now, but it was an important fishing port from the Middle Ages.

Next we will come to a little fishing village called Hellissandur, where you will have the opportunity to visit the old fisherman’s museum. The next town is Ólafsvík, followed by the mountainside village of Grundarfjörður. After travelling all around the Snæfellsnes National we will head back to Reykjavik.
