AVAILABILITY: Yearround
HIGHLIGHTS: Spice & Slave Historical Stops, Dr. Livingston's House, Sultan's Palace Ruins
A World Heritage Site, Stone Town is the cultural heart of the island and the old city. The city got its name from the many multistory buildings that look as though they are made of stone, but are actually built with mortar and corals.
Depart from your hotel at 9 am. Our first stop is a traditional fruit market which opened in 1904, followed by a visit to the Anglican Cathedral at Mkunazini, which was built on the site of the former slave market. Learn about the city’s slave history and see where slaves were auctioned.
Stop next at the National Museum of Zanzibar, also known as the Peace Memorial Museum, which holds a wide collection of the island’s natural history and artifacts. Next take a walk to Forondhani Gardens, where you will see the former British Consulate where explorers such as Dr. Livingston and Stanley came for administrative matters prior to explorations.
Explore the old fort and the House of Wonders, which was built by the Sultan and is the tallest building in Zanzibar. Take a walk in the narrow streets and explore some of the houses, many of which are more than 150 years old. Next visit the home of Dr. Livingston with an optional tour of the museum (entry fee required).
Finally, stop at Marahubi where you can see the ruins of Sultan Barghash’s Palace.
