This island was uninhabited until the 1860s when the Sultan gave it to Arabs to use as a prison for rebellious slaves. It was later purchased by a British First Minister who intended to use it as a large prison to house violent and repeat criminals. However, the prison quarters that were completed in 1894 were never used as a prison, but rather as quarantine facilities for British territories in East Africa.

The island is now occupied by giant tortoises of all sizes, which you can observe closely. Following your guided tour, take some time to swim or snorkel, exploring the coral reefs.
